I’ve been dying to do this entry for a while now. Introducing Shajar-al-Durr, who: was a Muslim sultan that ruled in her own name; stopped the Seventh Crusade dead in its tracks; captured one of the most powerful monarchs in the world; and ransomed him back to his own freakin’ country.

i love how tumblr is like personally offended by 50 shades of grey
I reblogged one of your mental health posts (the one about hypochondriacs and self-diagnosis) with some of my own comments and was wondering what you thought. I love this page and am always down to have an open dialogue
Okay followers lemme post his comment
"Not everyone can afford to see a psychiatrist but this is literally bullshit. Yes, your experiences are your own and yes, no one can speak for them but yourself, but people spend their lives and education LEARNING HOW TO DIAGNOSE AND TREAT MENTAL ILLNESS, and have seen enough to recognize what is happening to you on a neurological/emotional level. I love this page and what it stands for but jfc self-diagnosis is how people with headaches wind up thinking they have cancer. Is access to medicine class-based? YES, but let’s focus on changing that instead of delegitimizating a field that helps so many people live better lives."
1) literally not delegitimizing a field
2) as you’ve said many people don’t have access to medical attention which means sometimes you gotta find out what’s wrong with yourself. For instance: say you’re fucking allergic to peanuts … you’ve never been TOLD you were allergic to peanuts but you know damn fucking well if you so much as touch a peanut you break out in hives. HM.. wow what a delegitimization of a field you’re doing by saying you’re allergic to peanuts. Kind of the same fucking thing when you literally break down and have flashbacks and fucking panic attacks whenever someone mentions some certain topic. Pretty sure you’re alright to say “hey that’s triggering I’m triggered by that … that’s probably a fucking problem” or do you need to go spend money to have someone tell you that? Money most people don’t fucking have.
3) “I love this page and what it stands for but jfc self-diagnosis is how people with headaches wind up thinking they have cancer.”
you’re going about this in an ableist manner. For instance I was literally peeing blood, didn’t know why, didn’t really have money to find out why by going to a proper doctor, so I googled my symptoms, turns out I have kidney stones. If I hadn’t read up on that shit, I would have been suckered into believing yet again by a doctor it was just my period or it was just a UI, no, legit kidney stones, I almost died because doctors can be literally shit, especially when it comes to poor people using a free clinic. I got help because of my self-diagnosis. point is it does help doctors, and psychiatrists, and psychologists to know what you think is wrong with yourself. Your ableist bullshit isn’t really going to change that.
4) “Is access to medicine class-based? YES, but let’s focus on changing that instead of delegitimizing a field that helps so many people live better lives.”
This is the biggest pile of liberal bullshit I’ve ever heard. “LOL I KNOW THE MEDICAL SYSTEM IS ALREADY NOT IN YOUR FAVOR BUT CAN YOU NOT HELP YOURSELF I NEED TO SAVE THE SYSTEM FIRST”
Pretty fucking sure a person can tell when they’re SAY depressed. “oh you have trouble getting out of bed and feel like life and yourself are meaningless, you often cry and think about committing suicide… WELL BETTER NOT DIAGNOSE YOURSELF WITH A PROBLEM BECAUSE THAT’S DELEGITIMIZATION OF A FIELD WHICH IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR MENTAL HEALTH FOR SOME REASON ALL OF THIS IS TRUE.”
